An Armed Man Was Arrested at a Bookie after Taking Hostages

The Northumbria police department was called to one of the Coral retail shops located in Grange Road, Jarrow, because of a report of a man who possesses a firearm. The police stopped the incident by using a less lethal weapon, which was a Taser according to the locals. There were four hostages taken inside the betting shop. The witnesses stated that they saw three of them being released. However, the officers continued to negotiate to free the fourth one until the deadlock came to an end. Users of social media stated that there were noises of gunshots right before the end of the impasse. A spokesman for the police reported that at 8:44 pm the officers negotiated the safe release of the last hostage. Later at 8:53 pm, the man who possessed the firearm was arrested. The gun was taken, and the 39-year-old man was taken into police custody. A police issue with a Taser was discharged during the incident to bring this matter to a safe end. This may have been the shots that some of the locals heard. The good news is that no one was injured during this incident, the police are working hard to get the area back to normal. A resident stated that he and some locals watched the police surround the shop as the hostages were being released. He added that the armed man came to the door once in a while to talk to the officers, but they could not see his face because of the covered the windows with newspapers.
