US Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing
The Triple Crown in the US consists of the three most popular races in the history. It all kicks-off with the Kentucky Derby at the beginning of May, followed by the Preakness Stakes later in the month. The last race is held in New York in the month of June and is called the Belmont Stakes.
These three events are the American Classic Races, and if a horse wins all of them, then it has won the Triple Crown, which was accomplished by a tiny number. If you want to learn more about Triple Crown races around the world, check out our article on Triple Crowns in horse racing.
Other Races in America
Even though the Triple Crown Races are some of the major horse races in the United States, there are other Grade I events taking place during the year. Some of the most famous horse racing events are the Kentucky Oaks, the Florida Derby, the Hollywood Derby, and the Arkansas Derby. Of course, they do not attract the same viewership as the American Classic Races, but that does not make them unimportant.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic is another important race in America due to the huge prize pool that it has – at the moment around 5 million dollars. The race is a part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championship which takes place at a different track each time. For more details, check out our page about the Breeders’ Cup.
UK Triple Crown Horse Races
The British version of the Triple Crown is older than the American one, ranging back from 1853. The races which are part of the UK Triple Crown are some of the most popular flat races in the world.
At the end of April or beginning of May, the 2000 Guineas Stakes is held at the Newmarket Racecourse, followed by the Epsom Derby at the Epsom Downs racetrack in June. Lastly, the Triple Crown is closed by the St. Leger Stakes which takes place in Doncaster in September. The last horse that won the English Triple Crown did it in 1970, so you can see how difficult it is to accomplish that.
Including the UK Triple Crown races, there are two more events which form the British Classics. One of them is the 1000 Guineas Stake which is held at the same meeting as the 2000 Guineas Stakes. At the beginning of June, the Epsom Oaks takes place during the Epsom Derby Festival.
Other UK Racing Events
There are many more famous horse racing events in the UK which are held yearly. One of them is the Grand National – one of the most famous jump races worldwide takes place at the Aintree Racecourse every year. Another popular racing event is the Cheltenham Racecourse which takes place during the Cheltenham Festival. Thousands of people either attend the events or watch them on television. The other main horse races include the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the ones held at the Glorious Goodwood and the Royal Ascot Festival.
Horse Racing in Other Countries
Although the biggest competitions take place in Britain and the USA, there are other world nations that promote annual events.
The Melbourne Cup
Australia is another country where horse racing is a beloved sport, and the biggest event there is the Melbourne Cup. It has been around since 1861 and is held in November. Seeing as it is a national holiday, you can understand why many people think that the Melbourne Cup is one of the largest events in the country. The Dubai World Cup
This event is relatively new compared to the other ones that were listed here, but the Dubai World Cup has a reputation of one of the biggest horse races not only in Asia but in the world. A huge part of that is due to the large prize pool which is currently 10 million dollars. The event takes places at the Meydan Racecourse on a synthetic track. Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
This French horse racing event, also known as The Arc, takes places each year at the beginning of October and offers a $5 million cash prize. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been around since 1920 and is a popular event watched by millions of people.
Other Famous Horse Racing Events

In countries like Ireland, there are races such as the Guinness Gold Cup, the Irish Derby, and the Irish Grand National. You already know about the Melbourne Cup in Australia, but they also have the Australian Oaks, the Australian Derby, and the Australian Cup.
New Zealand also has its big event in the New Zealand Derby which is held in Auckland. Asia is a continent where horse racing grew in popularity and is continuing to do so. The Japan Cup has a big prize which can get up to several millions.
