History of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
The first time this race took place, was the 3rd of October, 1920. The winner was a horse called Comrade, and it won 150,000 francs. The race was created as an addition to the Grand Prix de Paris which was around since the 1860s. Three-year-old Thoroughbred horses from across the world were allowed to participate in the Grand Prix de Paris. Later, the Prix du Conseil Muncipal made its first appearance and allowed horses of different ages to enter.
Because of the penalties in the Prix du the Société d’Encouragement introduced Conseil Muncipal (horses were handicapped according to their previous finishes), the idea for an equal playing field for all horses. That is how the Prix de lArc de Triomphe was created. The name came from the Arc De Triomphe and was chosen after the First World War.
